GREAT MILLS, Md. – A medical emergency is believed to have led to a single-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon, May 6, 2025, that injured at least one person and knocked out a major intersection’s traffic signal in Great Mills.

The crash occurred shortly after 2:00 p.m. at the intersection of FDR Boulevard and Chancellors Run Road. First responders arrived to find a vehicle that had struck a traffic signal utility box and sheared off a crosswalk pole. The intersection’s traffic light was rendered inoperable.

Emergency medical crews assessed multiple people at the scene. One middle-aged man was transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital with injuries sustained in the crash.

Authorities on scene said preliminary information suggests the driver may have suffered a medical episode prior to the collision.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate.

Motorists are urged to use caution in the area and anticipate delays while repairs to the traffic signal are underway.
