Karen Tumultyโ€™s front page article titled โ€œRand Paul Moving From Fringes Into Mainstreamโ€ฆWith an Eye on White House, Senator Aims to Reshape GOPโ€ which ran in the June 20 Washington Post carries a timely quote by Rand from his March 31 speech at the Ronald Reagan Library in California: โ€œIf we want to win nationally again, we will have to reach out to a diverse nation and welcome African Americans, Asians, Latinos into our party. When the Republican Party looks like the rest of America, we will win again.โ€

Ms. Tumulty points out that Rand โ€œrepresents a brand of inclusiveness at a time when the party is desperate to reach beyond its baseโ€ฆhe also has an ability to excite young people that no one else in the party can matchโ€.

While not endorsing Rand as a potential GOP presidential candidate, I applaud his statement above in regards to the future of the Republican party. St. Maryโ€™s Countyโ€™s Republican party is also working towards inclusiveness through a variety of outreach endeavors; notably, the newly-formed Youth Political Roundtable Discussions, holiday food drives, and continuing, as in recent years, the Republican presence at county community functions such as the Juneteenth Celebration in Lexington Park and the Relay for Life event held at Leonardtown High School last month. And 2014 Republican candidates across the state of Maryland encompass great multicultural diversity.

If you are interested in supporting local Republicans, you are invited to attend the next Open Meeting of the St. Maryโ€™s County Republican Central Committee to be held this Thursday, July 11 at 7 p.m. at the F.O.P. Lodge on Chancellorโ€™s Run Road.ย This meeting is free and open to the general public; all are welcomed to attend.
