LEONARDTOWN, Md. – St. Mary’s County Government’s Department of Recreation & Parks (R&P) invites residents and visitors to celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday, June 6, by exploring one of the many walking and nature trails located throughout the county.
Adults, teens, and children are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors and reconnect with nature by participating in a self-guided nature walk. Two versions of the activity are available on the R&P website: a Nature Presence Walk for adults and a kid-friendly Nature Adventure Walk. Simply download, print, and fold the activity page of your choice to bring along during your walk.
Participants can choose any county park trail to complete their walk and enjoy the beauty and benefits of spending time in nature. Myrtle Point Waterfront Park, Chaptico Park, Baggett Park, Fifth District Park, Chancellor’s Run Regional Park, and Dorsey Park all feature wooded nature trails of varying lengths. Other popular walking destinations include the paved Three Notch Trail and the extensive walking paths at Lexington Manor Passive Park.
As part of the celebration, the first 500 individuals who visit the Recreation & Parks Main Office in Leonardtown during the month of June and share which trail or park they visited for National Trails Day will receive a free National Trails Day “Sunny the Squirrel” sticker. The Main Office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
National Trails Day is celebrated annually across the country to encourage people of all ages to discover local trails, enjoy outdoor recreation, and promote stewardship of natural resources. National Trails Day is a great opportunity for individuals and families to get outside, stay active and discover the natural resources available throughout St. Mary’s County.
