Spectacular weather was enjoyed by an overflow crowd Sunday, Sept. 22ย at Watermenโs Wharf in Solomons for the 12th annual Calvert County Watermenโs Festival.
The spectators jammed the bleachers to watch the main attraction, the boat docking contest. Work boats and charter boats competed in the speed and accuracy contest. The vessels traveled to Solomons from all over the Chesapeake Bay region to compete for cash prizes and trophies.
The eventโs opening ceremonies featured the raising of the American flag by the Calvert County Sheriffโs Office, the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by local performer Deanna Dove and greetings from Dr. Thomas Miller, the director of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory.
Local service organizations and restaurants served a variety of food to the throng.
The eventโs sponsor, the Calvert County Watermenโs Association, is a non-profit organization that has worked for nearly 40 years to improve the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries to ensure productive harvesting of seafood in the future.
