CALIFORNIA, Md. – Southern Maryland is bracing for a surge of oppressive heat heading into the weekend, with the National Weather Service warning of potentially hazardous conditions for residents across the region.
A Heat Advisory remains in effect Friday, July 25, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with heat index values expected to climb between 105 and 110 degrees in St. Mary’s, Charles, and Calvert counties. Similar conditions are forecast throughout the D.C. metro area, Central Maryland, and Northern Virginia.
According to NWS forecasters in Baltimore/Washington, Friday will be the hottest day of the week, with actual air temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s and high humidity pushing the heat index to dangerous levels—particularly east of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
“Extended exposure to this kind of heat can be dangerous,” the NWS warned in a statement, urging residents to avoid strenuous activity, stay hydrated, and seek out cool or shaded areas during peak afternoon hours.
Local emergency officials are activating cooling centers and issuing reminders to protect vulnerable populations. In Calvert, St. Mary’s, and Charles counties, libraries, senior centers, and community facilities are open during normal hours for those seeking heat relief.
Animal services in all three counties are emphasizing pet safety as well, urging owners to bring pets indoors or ensure they have access to shade and water.
Safety guidance from the NWS includes:
- Wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
- Drinking water regularly, even if not thirsty
- Never leaving children or pets in parked vehicles
- Avoiding mid-day outdoor activity if possible
Scattered thunderstorms may bring brief relief Friday afternoon, but meteorologists caution they will be spotty and may not cool all areas equally.
The advisory expires Friday evening, though forecasters say the heat will linger into the weekend with only slight relief expected. Residents are urged to monitor local weather alerts and check in on neighbors, especially seniors or those without air conditioning.
