Southern Maryland is no stranger to war veterans.ย In fact, as of 2008, more than 51,000 veterans live in Calvert, Charles and St. Maryโ€™s counties, comprising 11 percent of Marylandโ€™s veteran population.

In St. Maryโ€™s County, only 860 veterans use the Veterans Integrated Service Network โ€“ National Capitol Region facilities out of the countyโ€™s more than 12,000 veterans, a usage rate of 7 percent.ย The VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C., is available to veterans in Southern Maryland, and it oversees outpatient care at the Charlotte Hall Community-based Outpatient Clinic.ย

For all these local veterans, St. Maryโ€™s Hospital is sponsoring an afternoon of conversation and ice cream sundaes on Aug. 9 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Lindaโ€™s Cafรฉ in Lexington Park.ย The southern regional resource coordinator with the Marylandโ€™s Commitment to Veterans initiative will be present to answer questions about veteransโ€™ benefits and services.

This is your chance to meet, greet and connect with fellow Southern Maryland veterans and their families.ย Call Health Connections at (301) 475-6019 if you plan to attend.
