WALDORF, Md. — The energy was high as Charles County kicked off its first public meeting to discuss the design of the highly anticipated Sports and Wellness Complex at St. Charles Towne Center. The event, held on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, in the former Sears building, saw a strong turnout from community members eager to have their voices heard.
“We want to hear from everybody possible,” said Kelly Deavers, director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. “We will negotiate, and we will build consensus as a community on how we move forward.”
This landmark project has been years in the making, and county officials are eager to ensure it reflects the needs and aspirations of the residents it will serve.
“I’ve been with the county for over 20 years, and this is very much a long time coming,” said Sam Drury, deputy director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. “I’ve heard countless times, ‘Why don’t we have this in Charles County?’ Being able to bring this to you all is truly a pleasure, and I look forward to continuing this journey with everybody.”
The future Sports and Wellness Complex is envisioned as a cutting-edge, multigenerational facility that may include a natatorium (swimming pool complex), gymnasium, fitness center and other features based on community feedback. The 130,000-square-foot facility will be designed with direct public input through a series of engagement meetings, with the next sessions scheduled for March and May. The goal is to finalize concept plans by June 2025. Concept plans also show potential expansions to outdoor playgrounds and other recreational areas to further enhance community engagement and accessibility.
Among those in attendance were County Commissioners Amanda Stewart, Ralph Patterson, Reuben Collins and BJ Bowling, as well as key staff from the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Jake Dyer, acting fiscal director at Charles County Government, was on hand to answer budget-related questions for the community.
For those unable to attend, residents still have the chance to shape the project’s future. A public survey is open until Feb. 17, providing an additional opportunity for input at Charles County Public Survey.

“I have done a lot of projects, but I’ve never been this excited about one,” Deavers added. “I’m so grateful that you all are here.”
At the end of the meeting, all in attendance were given stickers to add to the image boards to indicate what features they were most interested in for the Sports and Wellness Complex. The indoor track board was completely covered—clearly, Charles County wants an indoor track.
