Joseph David Hurry (“David”), 62, of Leonardtown, MD passed away in his home after a battle with esophageal cancer on December 10, 2024. He was the son of the late Philip “Phil” Henry Hurry and the late Katherine (“Kitty Lee”) Leila (nee Greenwell) Radford.
David is survived by his loving wife, Barbara of Mechanicsville, MD; his stepdaughter, Amber Poisson of Lexington Park, MD; his son-in-law Thomas Baker of Lexington Park, MD; 3 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter; his siblings: Melanie Genevieve Guy of Mechanicsville, MD, JoAnne Louise Alu of Dunkirk, MD and John Bernard Hurry of Clements, MD; and extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his stepson Jeremy Sean Poisson, his siblings James Michael Hurry, Katherine Claire Radford and Philip Henry Hurry, and his best furry friend Hachi.
As a youngster, David attended Leonard Hall Naval Academy where he was lead drummer in the marching band. He attended Chopticon High School, then attended The Seafarers Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship in Piney Point, MD and served in the Merchant Marines for several years. David proudly served in the US Army during the 1980s as a Petroleum Supply Specialist in the 82nd Airborne Division. After his discharge David began working in the construction field and eventually met his wife, Barbara while working on a commercial construction project at PAX NAS.
David was an accomplished drummer and played with several local bands including Paradox, a heavy metal band that showcased his amazing double-bass abilities. He also loved fishing, crabbing, oystering, boating and attending vintage boat races. A favorite summer activity was a day at Abel’s Wharf where he’d pull his family around on a giant hotdog raft and grill burgers on the beach.
A celebration of David’s life will be held at the Brinsfield Funeral Home on December 27, 2024 at 1:00 pm. Interment will be private.
