Arrest in southern Maryland

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A Laurel man is facing multiple drug charges after a substance suspected to be cocaine was discovered in his wallet during booking at Calvert County Detention Center following a traffic stop that revealed an active administrative warrant from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Raul Antonio Osorio-Chavez, 53, was arrested after deputies observed erratic driving and discovered his license was suspended.

According to Calvert County District Court records, the incident occurred on Sept. 14, 2025, around 12:18 a.m. when Detective Sgt. K. Grabill initiated a traffic stop on a gray Nissan Sentra traveling northbound on Southern Maryland Boulevard near Brickhouse Road. The court documents state that the vehicle was traveling 35 mph in a 55 mph zone and that the driver was unable to maintain his lane, crossing the solid white line multiple times.

After identifying Osorio-Chavez through his Maryland driver’s license, Grabill contacted Calvert County Control Center and was advised that the license was suspended. Court records also indicate that authorities discovered an outstanding administrative warrant of removal issued by ICE.

Osorio-Chavez was detained in handcuffs while authorities confirmed his identity with ICE through photograph verification, according to charging documents. After the detention warrant was sent to the jail, Osorio-Chavez was placed under arrest and transported to Calvert County Detention Center, along with personal property including a phone and wallet.

During the booking process, Correctional Deputy Stone allegedly found two small bags containing a white powdery substance inside Osorio-Chavez’s wallet, along with clear plastic wrap containing a similar material. Charging documents state that the substances are suspected to be crack cocaine.

The suspected substances were turned over to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and placed into evidence at 3:30 a.m. The items have been submitted to the Maryland State Police for laboratory testing.

Osorio-Chavez has been charged with three misdemeanors: possession of controlled dangerous substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession or receipt of controlled dangerous substances while confined or detained. According to charging documents, the drug possession charges carry a maximum penalty of four years in prison and a $25,000 fine each. The paraphernalia charge carries up to one year in jail and a $500 fine.

Court records show that Osorio-Chavez was released on his own recognizance on Sept. 14, 2025. The Calvert County Public Defender’s Office has entered an appearance on his behalf and filed motions requesting a speedy trial and discovery of evidence.

A trial is scheduled for Oct. 15, 2025, at 1 p.m. in Courtroom 1 of Calvert County District Court. According to the sheriff’s office, the incident was recorded on Detective Grabill’s body-worn camera.

The State’s Attorney’s Office for Calvert County is prosecuting the case. All proceedings are scheduled to take place in Calvert County District Court in Prince Frederick.

  1. What the Hell, he has an active warrant through ICE, gets arrested for DUI and is found to have drug in his possession and is still released on bond. No wonder people think that our justice system has failed us. What are the odds that he shows up for court? SMH
