
VALLEY LEE, Md. — A dump truck struck a utility pole Tuesday afternoon, July 8, 2025, bringing down live wires and sparking a small grass fire that has temporarily shut down Piney Point Road near Blake Creek Road.
The crash occurred around 12:49 p.m., prompting a swift response from firefighters and utility crews. No injuries were reported, but the collision left wires draped across the roadway, forcing officials to close the area to traffic while crews worked to extinguish the fire and secure the scene.

The blaze was quickly contained and did not spread beyond the immediate roadside, according to emergency personnel on scene.
According to Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO), approximately 877 customers were left without power. As of Tuesday afternoon, SMECO said it is still assessing the condition of the damage. Crews remain on scene working to clear the area and restore electricity.

The road remains closed, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
