LEONARDTOWN, Md. – The local youth football scene is buzzing with excitement as the Lusby and Leonardtown leagues prepare for their inaugural “Battle of the Bridge” championship event. Graciously sponsored by Under Armour, these leagues have grown substantially, providing young athletes with high-quality equipment and facilities while fostering community spirit and sportsmanship.

Founded four years ago and sponsored by Under Armour, the Lusby-Leonardtown Youth Football League provides high-quality football programs for young athletes. With a focus on community, sportsmanship, and development, the league has grown steadily and now includes participants from both Lusby and Leonardtown.

Four years ago, a small group of football enthusiasts in Lusby caught the attention of Under Armour, who invited them to join their league. Despite initial hesitations, the Lusby group embraced the opportunity, leading to a successful partnership that has seen the league grow from 129 kids to 235 this year.

“Our growth has been strategic and measured,” said league organizer Jimmy Eaches. “We don’t want to get too big too fast because it’s hard to find coaches. But partnering with local high school coaches has been a game-changer.”

The league’s structure is supported by Nick Allen, the offensive coordinator at Patuxent High School, and Justin Cunningham, the head football coach at Leonardtown High School. Their involvement has not only brought expertise but also a vision of creating a pipeline of talent for high school football programs.

This year marks the first time Leonardtown has joined the league, starting strong with 165 participants. The collaboration between Lusby and Leonardtown promises a thrilling competition, culminating in the “Battle of the Bridge.” This championship will see the winners from each age group in both towns compete for a specially designed championship belt.

“The belt is a unique trophy with the Thomas Bridge image, symbolizing the connection between our communities,” Eaches explained. “It will be displayed in the trophy case of the winning team’s high school, either Patuxent or Leonardtown.”

The championship events are scheduled for this weekend, with the seventh and eighth graders kicking off the competition on Friday night at Appeal Elementary in Lusby. The younger age groups will follow on Saturday, starting at noon, with the final game determining the ultimate champion at 3 PM.

“We’re calling on the community to come out and support these young athletes,” Eaches urged. “It’s going to be an exciting weekend, and we hope to see a big turnout.”

The league’s commitment to the community extends beyond the field. At the end of each season, they donate funds to local high schools, supporting the further development of youth sports programs.
