Donate a new or gently used book, unwrapped, to the Angel Tree Book Drive this holiday season and help expand the home libraries of children in need. United Way of Calvert County aims to collect over 600 books for children, ranging in age from birth to 16, with the support of Department of Social Services, St. Nicholas Lutheran Church and many local agencies and businesses.
“Language and literacy” is the weakest learning domain for children entering kindergarten in Calvert County, with only 79% of children assessed as fully proficient. “A book is a special gift with the power to cultivate imagination, expand vocabulary and advance literary skills- every child should be afforded this opportunity,” says United Way of Calvert County’s Director of Community Impact Jennifer Moreland.
The Angel Tree Book Drive is accepting donations from now until Thursday, December 6 at receptacle locations throughout Calvert County, including: all Calvert Library branches, Calvert County Senior and Community Centers, all SMECO locations, Calvert Marine Museum, Calvert County Courthouse and Community Resources Building, St. Paul United Methodist Preschool, Prime Time Children’s Center, Grover Place Children’s Center, Mt. Hope Community Center, Department of Social Services, the Calverton School and the United Way House in Prince Frederick.
