A 38-year-old Mechanicsville man is in critical condition after being severely burned in a fire that destroyed his home and killed two family pets.
Troy Neville, 38, suffered second and third degree burns to his face, arms, and legs and remains in critical condition at the Washington Hospital Center, after being flown from the fire. Firefighters also report he suffered inhalation burns.
Maryland Deputy State Fire Marshals are continuing the investigation into the blaze that started minutes before 7 a.m. Tuesday on East Edinview Court in Mechanicsville.
The fire caused an estimated $400,000 in damage to the split foyer, single family home owned by Mary Cave, mother-in-law of the injured man.
Forty firefighters from Mechanicsville, Hughesville, Hollywood, Seventh District, and Golden Beach were able to bring the fire under control in thirty minutes.ย There were no firefighter injuries.
Investigators have determined the fire began in a family room on the lower level of the home.
A smoke alarm activated awakening the injured man and 8-year-old Jacob Neville. Although the boy safely escaped the home, it is believed Troy Neville may have attempted to fight the fire.
The exact cause of the fire has not been determined, however no evidence has been discovered to indicate arson as the cause.
