
Benjamin J. Culbert
Leonardtown, MD–ย On April 13, St. Maryโs County Sheriffโs Office Deputy Kenneth Flelage responded to the St. Maryโs County Adult Detention Center located at Baldridge Street in Leonardtown in regards to recovered contraband.
When Flelage arrived on the scene he made contact with Correctional Officer CFC. S. Kuczewski who advised, โhe smelled smoke coming from the work release housing unit,โ according to charging documents.
When Kuczewski entered the housing unit and observed inmate/defendant Benjamin J. Culbert, 25, of Leonardtown walking away from the area where he (Kuczewski) smelled the smoke. Kuczewski stopped Culbert, โat which time he noticed Culbertโs hands were closed as if he was trying to conceal an unknown item,โ according to charging documents.
Kuczewski asked Culbert what was in his hand and Culbert originally gave him a paper towel which was in his left hand. Kuczewski asked Culbert what else was in his left hand and Culbert handed Kuczewski a clear baggie with suspected chewing tobacco inside of it.
Culbert was removed from the housing unit, placed under arrest and charged with possession of contraband in a confined facility. According to charging documents, โCulbert was currently awaiting to serve a 10-day consecutive sentence for possession of contraband in a confined facility.โ
Culbert at this time does not have a scheduled court date. Culbert faces a maximum jail sentence of three years and/or a maximum fine of $1,000.
