ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Maryland Redistricting Commission is set to hold its next meeting on Jan. 9 to allow for discussion of the maps submitted by the public.
The meeting will take place on Zoom from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Anyone who wishes to provide verbal testimony during the meeting can register online ahead of the meeting. Testimony is limited to three minutes and screen sharing is not permitted.
The commission decided to move forward with redistricting after a contentious closed-door meeting and a 3-2 vote on Dec. 12, which was criticized by several lawmakers, including Bill Ferguson [D], president of the Maryland Senate.

United States Sen. Angela Alsobrooks leads the commission and said in an earlier statement that the group would hold two public meetings in 2026 to review maps and hear public input. The Jan. 9 session is the first of those two meetings. The date for the second has not yet been announced.
The maps in question have been submitted by the public. They are not the work of the commission. All maps are available for viewing online.
For Southern Maryland residents, redistricting may come with additional risks as longtime Congressman Steny Hoyer [D], announced his retirement on Thursday, Jan. 8. Hoyer’s current district, District 5, encompasses the entirety of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties, along with parts of Anne Arundel and Prince George’s. Hoyer was elected in 1981 and is the longest-serving Democrat in Congress, whose seat would have been up for grabs in 2026. Now, residents of the Southern counties will see two changes in what is likely to be a competitive election year.
