The annual rites of passage and spring tradition that accompanies May 1 at St. Maryโs College of Maryland used to be a quiet campus only event. An eye-opening tradition where students throw off the last vestiges of winter along with much of their clothing and march across campus.
However, in recent years, the quirky habit has turned into more of a media event and spectacle; much to the chagrin of SMCM students. What was once a private celebration has attracted photographers, media and gawkers from across the region and beyond. Over the past two years, that has caused students to fight back. This year was no exception to the growing consternation of the participating student body.
