On Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 10:50pm, Cpl. M. W. Laney initiated a traffic stop on a gold Lincoln passenger vehicle in the area of Maryland Route 235 and

for a traffic violation. Upon approaching the vehicle, the operator was identified as David Isiah Butler, 39, of Mechanicsville. While speaking with Mr. Butler, Cpl. Laney observed what appeared to be pieces of raw marijuana on Mr. Butler’s lap. Following the arrival of additional units, a probable cause search of the vehicle and Mr. Butler’s person was performed. The search revealed CDS in the area between the front passenger seat and passenger door. Mr. Butler was advised he was being placed under arrest for Possession of CDS – Not Marijuana. When Cpl. Laney attempted to handcuff Mr. Butler he began to resist and fled on foot. Mr. Butler was caught a short time later and arrested. He was transported to the St. Mary’s CountyDetentionCenter where he was charged accordingly and held pending a bond review with the District Court Commissioner.
