LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Cat lovers in Southern Maryland have a new reason to celebrate. Meow Dyer Cat Cafe officially opened its doors on Jan. 10 in Leonardtown, offering a cozy space for guests to relax, mingle with adoptable cats, and shop for unique feline-themed merchandise.

Founded by Shannon Obedoza, a lifelong cat enthusiast and proud owner of 11 cats, Meow Dyer Cat Cafe was born from a passion for helping rescue cats find loving homes. Inspired by a friend’s challenge of fostering 39 rescue cats, Obedoza envisioned a space where cats, especially older ones, could comfortably showcase their personalities outside the confines of traditional adoption events.

Partnering with Feral Cat Rescue, Meow Dyer serves as a foster environment for adoptable cats. Visitors can interact with the cats in a relaxed setting and, if a connection is made, use in-house QR codes to access Feral Cat Rescue’s adoption application. Since its soft opening, the cafe has already facilitated four successful adoptions, with more applications in progress.

“The goal is to give these cats a chance to come out of their shells and truly connect with potential adopters,” Obedoza said. “It’s hard for older cats to do that in a cage at adoption events. Here, they can play and interact naturally.”

The grand opening weekend was a resounding success, with the cafe welcoming approximately 130 visitors on Saturday alone. With a cozy capacity of 10 guests per half-hour time slot, reservations are highly recommended to ensure a spot to relax with the cats.

While the full-service cafe portion is slated to launch this summer, guests can currently enjoy prepackaged drinks, including water, iced tea, sodas, and energy drinks. The cafe also offers sweet treats from Christina’s Cookies, with plans to expand its snack options in the future. Guests are welcome to bring in beverages from the neighboring Social Coffeehouse to enjoy during their visit.

In addition to fostering feline connections, Meow Dyer features a boutique stocked with an array of cat-themed merchandise. From stickers and car decals to unique women’s clothing—including dresses and skirts—the shop offers items not typically found elsewhere. Proceeds from bookings and boutique sales go directly toward the care of the cafe’s resident cats, covering essentials like shelter, litter, and veterinary care, as Feral Cat Rescue only provides food.

All resident cats are spayed or neutered, vetted, and litter-trained, ensuring they’re ready for their forever homes. “Every cat here is fully vetted and ready for adoption. We’ve worked with a few to adjust, but currently, all our cats are housebroken,” Obedoza said.

Meow Dyer Cat Cafe invites the community to experience this unique space where cat lovers can unwind, meet adoptable furry friends, and support local rescue efforts. Reservations can be made through their social media pages, and more information is available online.

For those seeking a purr-fect outing, Meow Dyer Cat Cafe promises a heartwarming experience in the heart of Leonardtown.
