NANJEMOY, Md. — Fire officials have released their investigation findings after a house fire last week on Gilroy Road left one person injured and caused an estimated $280,000 in damages.

The fire broke out around 8:58 p.m. on Feb. 21, 2025 at a single-story home on Gilroy Road near Burns Drive. The home’s occupant, who was inside at the time, discovered the fire in a bedroom and managed to escape but suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation. She was transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Emergency dispatch records show that crews from the Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department and surrounding agencies arrived to find the house engulfed in flames. Fifty-seven firefighters worked for 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. Challenges included structural instability and the need for additional water supply, which required tanker shuttles from nearby areas.

Fire investigators confirmed that smoke alarms were present and activated at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, but authorities stated it does not appear to be suspicious.

The home sustained an estimated $250,000 in structural damage, with an additional $30,000 in lost contents.
