INDIAN HEAD, Md. – On March 12, 2024, at approximately 7:15 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a school bus on Mason Springs Road near Gilwell Place.
Crews arrived to find Charles County school bus 62 and a pickup truck involved in the crash. The bus was unoccupied with children at the time of the incident.
The driver of the pickup truck sustained leg injuries and was pinned inside the vehicle. Firefighters had to cut the vehicle to extricate the individual.
Due to the severity of the injuries, emergency medical services requested a medical evacuation. Firefighters established a landing zone at Maryland Airport for Maryland State Police, Trooper 2. The injured male was then airlifted to UM Capital Region Trauma Center for treatment. The bus driver refused care at the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident. As a result, Mason Springs Rd (Rt 425) will be shut down in both directions between Araby Place and Smith Drive for an extended period.
