Calvert Marine Museum

SOLOMONS, Md. OtterMania returns to the Calvert Marine Museum on Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., bringing a full day of playful activities, hands-on learning and otter-themed fun for families across Southern Maryland.

The museum transforms into an otter-themed adventure designed for families, inviting kids to jump right into the action by dancing the “Swim” with the otter mascots outside before heading through the museum to explore how otters stay warm, move through the water and adapt to survive in their natural habitats.Along the way, hands-on activities keep things moving, from “otterly” themed crafts to interactive exhibits. Visitors can also meet the biologists who care for Calvert and Chessie Grace and learn more about what goes into caring for the museum’s resident otters.

Need a quick break? Settle in for a special story time featuring “Ozzy Otter Learns to Ski” by children’s author Angela Kinney. The story follows Ozzy, a curious otter who isn’t afraid to try something new. With help from his friends, he learns that even if things don’t go perfectly the first time, teamwork and determination can lead to success.

Families can also stop by the Museum Store for a playful OtterMania raffle, where participants can guess how many “otter poo” candies are in a jar for a chance to win a themed prize.

Catch Calvert And Chessie In Action

Check in on the otters anytime with the indoor and outdoor live cams and catch the fun before you visit.

River otters are perfectly adapted for life in and around the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, though they often go unnoticed in the wild. Most active at dawn and dusk, their dark fur helps them blend into their surroundings, while daytime hours are often spent resting in dens or mud-bank caves. As top predators, they have a varied diet that can include fish, insects, birds, reptiles, amphibians and crustaceans.
