LEXINGTON PARK, Md. – The DAV Chapter #26 and Patuxent Habitat for Humanity have been partnering since 2019 to help veterans in our local community. Through our collaborative efforts we have been able to help several veterans with large critical home repairs. The DAV would help by assisting these veterans apply for their VA benefits and contribute monetary funds toward the critical home repair. Patuxent Habitat for Humanity offered the benefit of our building resources and volunteers to help keep the costs low so our veterans could afford the needed critical home repairs. Through our Veterans Critical Home Repair Program we helped these veterans with ramps and a bathroom remodel, with all handicapped accessible equipment and structural repair to doorway openings and doors with handicap fixtures.

Just before the pandemic hit the DAV lost its office space, so we offered to help them out by giving them the use of some office space at our affiliate in Lexington Park, MD. Over the past two years the DAV helped countless veterans complete the applications for VA benefits they so justly deserve. Every Wednesday they would see veterans from 10 am until the last veteran was gone.

The DAV Chapter #26 has recently acquired a new space that accommodates their needs more adequately. They are now serving veterans at 21801 North Shangri-La Drive in Lexington Park, MD. You can visit their website https://www.davch26stmarysmd.com/ for more information.

On Wednesday, February 16, 2022 the DAV presented Patuxent Habitat for Humanity with a plaque in appreciation of their gratitude. Our organizations will continue to partner with each other to help our local veterans with their critical home repair needs. Together we are striving to make their quality of life a bit better because everyone deserves a decent place to live, especially our veterans who have given so much already!

The Patuxent Habitat for Humanity Veteran Critical Repair Program is designed to repair homes for military veterans and their families. The program will assist with repairs identified in Habitat’s Critical Home Repair guidelines that may vary from roof repair and structural wall repairs to installing wheel chair ramps and remodeling bathrooms to be easily used by veterans with disabilities. If you would like to donate or volunteer for veteran programs please call Laurie at 301-863-6227×16 or email laurie@patuxenthabitat.org for more information.
