At 6:37 a.m. Dec. 12, Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department members and other rescue volunteer responded to 38306 Golden Beach Road for a reported barn fire.

Mechanicsville Fire Chief 1 arrived on scene first and advised he had a fully involved barn with an electric line down across the driveway, reports Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief John Raley.

Engine 224 arrived on scene and the crew advanced an attack line to the structure and started to attack the fire. The barn had mostly collapsed already and crews utilized a defensive attack from the start.

Engine 23 arrived next and its crew advanced additional lines, one from Engine 224 and one from their engine.

The bulk of the fire was knocked down in about twenty minutes.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident. Eight piglets were lost in the blaze, and a heater used to keep them warm is being looked at as the cause.

Units operated on the scene for approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes before clearing and returning to quarters.

Truck 7 assisted with extinguishment and overhaul. Engines 74, 24 and P.G. Tanker 36 ran a tanker shuttle from Business Center Drive and Market Drive, where Engine 21 was sitting on a hydrant.
