A Calvert Middle School (CMS) math teacher who also excelled in coaching died Monday, July 2 at West Virginia University Ruby Memorial Medical Center. A funeral home in Armagh, PA confirmed the passing of Rodney Richard Stewart, 43 of St. Leonard. Stewart, whose wife Karin also teaches at CMS, is a member of the Northern High School Coaches Hall of Fame and was once Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

โ€œHe was recognized for his fairness and toughness,โ€ stated an obituary posted on the Richard C. Stuart Funeral Home web site. Services for Stewart will be held at the Armagh, PA funeral home Saturday, July 7.

In May 2011, the Be a Match Foundation conducted a four-hour screening to identify a bone marrow match for Stewart, who had been diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The event was sponsored by the CMS PTSA.

A few days after the event, Karin Stewart told The Bay Net that nearly 400 people volunteered to be screened to determine if they were potential donors. Additionally, over $10,000 was collected by the PTSA for the Be a Match Foundation.

In addition to Karin, Rodney Stewart is survived by his daughters, Meggie and Carli, a sister and his parents.
