With cloudy skies looming and a major summer holiday underway, any crowd for a five kilometer (K) race is a good one. Patuxent High School (PHS) teacher and coach Dave Walser was quite pleased with the turnout for the Fifth annual Race to the Creek 5K Run and Walk Friday, July 4.

The race started and ended at PHS.

This was the first year the race has been held on Independence Day. Walser said he intends to make the dash a community traditionโ€”an ideal way to celebrate Americaโ€™s birth and prepare for a day-long feast of picnic food and fireworks.

Having a starting time of 8 a.m. also assures the runners and walkers wonโ€™t be taxed by the July heat, although that wasnโ€™t a concern this year.

High winds, no doubt the byproduct of Hurricane Arthur, and a pesky pre-race drizzle cooled off the athletes who traversed the PHS parking lot and the Lusby Connector Boulevard. The โ€œCreekโ€ in the raceโ€™s name is Mill Creek Middle School, which is west of PHS.

First to cross the finish line was Anthony Hughes of Thomasville, NC, who completed the course in 16 minutes and 48 seconds. Trent Herzog of Lusby came in second, logging a time of 17 minutes and eight seconds.

The third-place finisher was Alejandro Smith of Prince Frederick, whose time was 18 minutes, 31 seconds.

The top female finisher was Faith Wassnick of Leonardtown, who logged a time of 22 minutes and seven seconds.

Proceeds from the entry fees will be used to support PHS Track and Field.

The race was part of the Chesapeake Bay Running Club Grand Prix Series. Complete race results will subsequently be posted on the running clubโ€™s web site at www.cbrcmd.org
