SOUTHERN MARYLAND — During National Volunteer Month, SCORE Southern Maryland is recognizing the contributions of its volunteer mentors, who provide invaluable support to local entrepreneurs and small business owners.

In fiscal year 2024, SCORE Southern Maryland served 703 entrepreneurs through 1,584 one-on-one mentoring sessions. These sessions help individuals launch new ventures, grow existing businesses, and navigate challenges — all while contributing to job creation and economic development in the region.

“SCORE is the most effective source of small business mentoring in the U.S.,” said SCORE Southern Maryland Chapter Chair Tim Hanlon. “We are proud to be making a positive difference right here in our local community.”

Research shows that entrepreneurs who receive at least three hours of mentoring report stronger business growth and increased revenue. SCORE Southern Maryland also offers workshops, templates and tools to guide business owners at every stage of their journey.

The chapter’s volunteer mentors bring a diverse range of expertise, including:

  • Business operations and strategic planning
  • Financial management and business formation
  • Sales and marketing
  • Human resources and internal processes
  • Startups and early-stage business development
  • Industry-specific knowledge, including real estate, tourism and retail

National Volunteer Month, celebrated each April, honors the efforts of volunteers and encourages others to get involved. Becoming a SCORE mentor offers a way to give back by helping local entrepreneurs succeed.
