LUSBY, Md. — A 45-year-old man suffered serious burn injuries Monday evening, March 9, 2026, after a backyard fire ignited a gas can and spread to nearby woods in the Chesapeake Ranch Estates community in Lusby.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 8:20 p.m. to the 12400 block of Painted Horse Trail for a reported brush fire. Initial reports indicated the injured victim had been attempting to start a fire in the backyard when a gasoline container ignited, causing flames to spread into wooded areas behind the home.

Firefighters arrived to find a small fire burning in the backyard and quickly brought the flames under control. Officials estimated the fire burned approximately a quarter-acre of wooded area.
The victim who started the fire suffered burn injuries and was treated by emergency medical personnel at the scene. Due to the severity of the injuries, he was flown by Maryland State Police Trooper 7 helicopter to the burn center at MedStar Washington Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The incident remains under investigation.
