During a Tuesday, Jan. 28 pre-meeting staff session the Calvert County Commissioners officially welcomed Rai Sharma as county government’s new director of the Department of Public Works. Sharma, who has worked for Calvert for the past five years, succeeds Terry Carlson, who recently retired.
Prior to coming to Calvert, Sharma spent 35 years employed with the Wicomico County Government. Last fall the County Engineers Association of Maryland (CEAM) presented Sharma with its Meritorious Service Award. He had served as CEAM’s president in 2000-2001.
Sharma, who had been serving as the department’s deputy director, pledged “an open door policy” during his tenure. He thanked the commissioners for their vote of confidence with the promotion. Frequently, when a department director’s position becomes vacant and interim appointment is made.
The purview of Calvert’s Department of Public Works includes such infrastructure components as county road maintenance, road engineering, public water and sewerage, recycling, fleet maintenance and solid waste disposal.
