HOLLYWOOD, Md. — After years of persistence and repeated attempts, Southern Maryland magician Reggie Rice has been named Washington DC Magician of the Year, earning one of the highest honors in the region’s magic community.
The award, presented through the International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 50’s Dan Lacy competition, recognizes excellence among performers in the Washington, D.C., area. For Rice, a longtime member of Ring 50 since 2004, the achievement marks the culmination of decades of work.
Rice began his career performing at local venues, including children’s parties at places like Hyperspace Fun Center in St. Mary’s County. What started as small community performances eventually grew into a full-time career, with Rice now performing on cruise ships and stages around the world.
“I never would’ve believed that doing magic tricks would one day take me around the world,” Rice told The BayNet. “But that’s exactly what’s happened.”
Despite his success, the Dan Lacy competition proved to be one of his toughest challenges. Rice competed year after year, often falling short of the top honor.
“I knew I was funny… but I didn’t always feel like my magic was strong enough for that room,” he said.
Still, he continued to compete, pushing through years of doubt and near wins before ultimately securing the title.
Rice said the recognition represents more than just a personal achievement. Through school visits and career day appearances, he encourages students to think critically about their future.
“If those two answers aren’t the same… it’s time to rethink your path,” he said, referring to his advice that students align their career goals with what they would do if money were not a factor.
For more than 15 years, Rice has built a career centered on entertainment, focusing on comedy and illusion to connect with audiences.
He also emphasized the importance of representation for his home region.
“I want kids from Southern Maryland to see this and know—it’s possible. You can come from here and still do something big,” Rice said.
Rice continues to tour nationally and internationally and is seeking opportunities to visit more schools in Southern Maryland and beyond to share his story.
“This trophy means a lot… but what it really represents is this— I didn’t quit. And neither should you.”

First time I saw Reggie perform was about 14 years ago and my then 4 year old grandchild and I were completely amazed! Reggie has a true talent and so happy for him that he has made his dream come true! Congrats Reggie!
