CALIFORNIA, Md. — The loss of a beloved pet can leave a lasting impression on a family’s heart. This weekend, one St. Mary’s County family is turning that grief into an opportunity for 20 shelter dogs to find homes of their own.
In memory of Toby, a former resident of the St. Mary’s County Animal Adoption & Resource Center, his family has sponsored the adoption fees for the first 20 dogs adopted from Thursday, July 24, through Saturday, July 26.
That means 20 adopters can bring home a new companion without paying an adoption fee.
Remembering Toby
Toby was adopted from the county shelter and became a cherished member of his family. After his recent death, his owners wanted to honor his life and the companionship he gave them by helping other dogs receive the same chance.
“Toby always had a soulful greeting, jumping up and down the moment we walked in the door,” his family shared in a recent Facebook Post. “His silent companionship was a constant. His love for walks and being outdoors was unmatched. If anyone was taking a nap, he was snuggled up with them!”
In announcing the sponsorship, St. Mary’s County Animal Services described Toby as proof of the immense impression a pet can leave on a person’s heart.
“In honor of Toby’s life and unwavering companionship, adoption fees for the first 20 dogs adopted this weekend are sponsored,” Animal Services wrote. “For 20 lucky adopters, their new best friend can come home for free.”
How To Adopt This Weekend
The adoption-fee sponsorship is available to the first 20 dogs adopted during the event. The St. Mary’s County Animal Adoption & Resource Center is located at 22975 FDR Blvd. in California.
The center will be open:
- Thursday, July 24, from noon to 6 p.m.
- Friday, July 25, from noon to 4 p.m.
- Saturday, July 26, from noon to 4 p.m.
Those interested in adopting can view the county’s current list of available animals before visiting. According to the Animal Adoption & Resource Center, additional information is available by calling 301-475-8018.
Residents who are unable to adopt are encouraged to share the shelter’s announcement to help more dogs reach prospective families.
Animal Services also invited community members who have lost a pet to share photographs and memories on its Facebook post, allowing others to celebrate the companions they have loved and the pawprints they left behind.
“Rest in peace, Toby,” Animal Services wrote. “You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten.”
