NEWBURG, Md. — A Newburg man is facing misdemeanor handgun charges following a traffic stop in Charles County earlier this month that led to the recovery of a loaded firearm from inside a vehicle, according to court records and a police charging document.

Rickey Ray Williams Jr., 39, was arrested on the night of Jan. 6, 2026, after Maryland Transportation Authority Police stopped a vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. 301 (Crain Highway) near Clifton Drive. An officer reported clocking the vehicle at approximately 70 mph in a posted 55 mph zone using LIDAR equipment, prompting the stop.

During the encounter, officers asked Williams whether there was anything illegal inside the vehicle. Police said Williams acknowledged having a firearm and also removed cannabis from his jacket pocket, placing it on the center console. Officers then directed him not to reach for the weapon as he opened the center console to show it.

A second officer arrived on scene, and police recovered a Glock G26 9mm handgun from the center console. Court documents state the weapon was loaded with 10 rounds in the magazine, though none were chambered. A subsequent check through the Maryland Gun Center indicated the firearm was not registered to Williams.

Williams was arrested roadside and transported to the Charles County Detention Center for processing. He was charged with loaded handgun in a vehicle and handgun in a vehicle, both misdemeanors under Maryland law. Each charge carries a potential penalty of up to five years in jail and/or a $2,500 fine.

Court records show Williams was released on his own recognizance following a bond hearing on Jan. 7, 2026. He is scheduled to appear for trial on Feb. 25, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
