The recital will take place Dec. 16 at 5 p.m. in the Auerbach Auditorium, St. Mary’s Hall. The event is free and open to the public. St. Mary’s College is located at 18952 E. Olivia Vote is an internationally renowned opera singer who has appeared recently in operatic productions in Zurich, New York, Philadelphia and other cities around the world. She returned to the St. Mary’s community after an absence of 10 years to join the college’s adjunct faculty for the fall semester. She will return to Switzerland in 2015 to appear in a production of Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos.

The theme of the Dec. 16 recital is cooperation and collaboration between teachers and students in the spirit of the “Side By Side” movement popular among symphony orchestras. “Olivia is an absolutely stunning singer,” said Ganz. “Eliza Garth and I wanted our accompanying students to have the opportunity to work with an artist of her caliber before she leaves at the end of this semester. So we brainstormed about how to make that happen and came up with this cooperative concert. Eliza and I will accompany a few of Olivia’s voice students, and three of our piano students will accompany Olivia. Then Eliza and I will have a turn accompanying Olivia in a sort of ’round robin’ of music making.”

Works to be performed include songs of Ludwig van Beethoven, Francis Poulenc, Gabriel Fauré, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and others. “Olivia and I especially wanted to do a work of Beethoven because the 16th is his birthday! So we’ll sing and play the ravishing song Adelaide,” Ganz continued. In an interesting twist, Ganz was first introduced to Beethoven’s Adelaide 25 years ago when he first accompanied another member of the Vote family, Olivia’s father Larry, a baritone who is also on the faculty at St. Mary’s College. “It’s very moving for me to revisit that song with Olivia,” said Ganz.

Eliza Garth is a pianist renowned for solo and collaborative work. She is currently working on a major solo recording project with the American composer Sheree Clement.  Brian Ganz is musician-in-residence at St. Mary’s College. He is engaged in a ten-year project to perform the complete works of Frédéric Chopin at the Music Center at Strathmore outside of Washington, D.C.
