LEONARDTOWN, Md. – The St. Mary’s County Board of County Commissioners approved a budget amendment and authorized the Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPWT) to sign the State Highway Administration (SHA) Supplemental Agreement for the Pegg Road Sidewalk construction during their June 4, 2024, meeting.

The supplemental agreement for Pegg Road includes $240,000 in federal spending to improve sidewalks along the road, according to the Deputy Director of the Department of Public Works & Transportation, Gary Whipple.

“This project will provide safe sidewalk systems for pedestrians traveling along Pegg Road,” Whipple said.

The SHA administers federal project funding and when new projects develop, a supplemental agreement is created to specify the project’s information, according to Whipple.

During April 2022 the prior board requested “congressionally directed spending” to construct phase one of the Pegg Road sidewalk project, Whipple said. The previously approved fiscal year budget for 2023 was $300,000.

The first phase of the project provides sidewalks from MD 235 to Ronald Drive. The second phase of the project will construct the sidewalk from the Jarboesville Run bridge down to the Westbury intersection along with a roundabout to resolve any traffic.

The SHA has indicated plan specifications and estimates must be submitted by May 2026 for the funding to be fulfilled no later than September 2026, according to Whipple.

The DPWT has cleared environmental work and design plans have been submitted to the SHA in April, moving forward and on schedule with the desired timeline of the project.

The DPWT also requested approval for a budget amendment to create a federal funding line for the project for federal share. Permission to move money between funding accounts within a capital project was approved.

  1. LOL – who cares about sidewalks on Pegg Rd. Maybe request funding to repair roads or the TJ bridge.

  2. So, if bids must be submitted by May…of 2026(!), work will begin in…2028?

Pegg Rd was ‘connected’ over 20yrs ago. Way to stay on the ball!
