LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Gold medals were on display Tuesday morning as the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County celebrated three local athletes who carried Team Maryland to victory on a national stage.
Melody Chase, Tyeshia Holt and Mariah Blackstock were recognized during the commissioners’ Aug. 25 meeting for earning gold in the 4×100-meter relay at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games.
Commissioner Eric Colvin presented the proclamation, calling attention to the medals worn by the athletes as they stood before county leaders and members of the community.
“What an exciting morning,” Colvin said. “Any morning that we get to have some of our great athletes in here — and you notice that I think they’re wearing a gold medal, right? So, this is exciting.”
A Gold-Medal Performance
The athletes represented Team Maryland under the leadership of Head Coach Don Bewick and Assistant Coach Will Ridley.
According to the proclamation, the team’s success reflected its members’ hard work, commitment to excellence and “unwavering determination.”
County leaders also recognized the larger circle of support behind the athletes, including their families, loved ones, athletic trainers and the Special Olympics of St. Mary’s County organization.
“The team’s success … would not have been possible without the support of their family, loved ones, athletic trainers, and the Special Olympics of St. Mary’s County organization,” the proclamation stated.
Celebrating The Athletes
After Colvin read the proclamation, the athletes stepped forward and introduced themselves to the commissioners.
The county’s recognition celebrated more than the team’s place on the podium. It also highlighted the athletes’ dedication to one another and the community they represented throughout the national competition.
The commissioners formally commended the Maryland 4×100-meter relay team for its “outstanding performance” at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games.
“So, congratulations,” Colvin told the athletes. “We’re so proud of each of you.”
The proclamation was signed by all five members of the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County.
