LEONARDTOWN, Md. – On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to suspected tampering with the security seal on a narcotics box in a local medic unit.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division found that fentanyl vials in the medic box had been compromised, leading to further investigations that uncovered additional tampering incidents in multiple county medic units and EMS facilities.
Thomas Patrick Raley, 39, Chief of Emergency Medical Services for St. Mary’s County Government, has been identified as the lone suspect. The investigation is continuing in coordination with the Office of the State’s Attorney for St. Mary’s County.

Very sad.
Whatever happened to zero tolerance policies in places likes these??? Looks like the temptation is too big for some, weed em out because there are definitely others, possibly more qualified, who won’t tamper with and steal controlled medications. Doctors, pharmacists, NP… anyone able to prescribe and handle medication takes an oath, has a license… are the same paths and precautions in place for EMTs who have access to these controlled substances?
If Thomas Patrick Raley is being framed that’s y’all’s dumb fault for bringing him back to be a target and that’s why a zero tolerance policy would work well here.
The good ‘ol boy system.. I bet he stays.
The “boy” part is accurate, dude needs to grow up and get help for his addictions.
Third time’s a charm?
Why isn’t there a random urinalysis program for DES employees, as well as volunteers who have access to these drugs? Damaged or broken tamper seals only highlight the issue or problem after it occurs…
Because they’d fail.. I also found it interesting some of our EMS volunteers are in the worst health.
kind of the same topic. I understand the press must cover what it covers/ feels the need to cover what it covers. But please keep in mind the press has a field day with crimes until the trial happens. In the court of public opinion? But then, months later, when the facts come out in court after the press has had a field day. Its not realistic that the press not over a story before it makes it to court, but the facts don’t come out till court. Chit chat about a crime all you like, but thats what it is, chit chat.
I agree with there should be piss test for all
allowed to touch these drugs.
Including our police departments,
County and State Police.
And the results should be shared to the
public.
