College Park, MD — A friendly reminder from the Maryland State Police to motorists: don’t leave the scene of any collision.
If a driver is involved in a collision with injury or property damage, they are required by law to stay on the scene and provide information to the police as well as the owner or driver of any other vehicles that are involved.
Leaving the scene is not an option. And not just if another vehicle is involved. If you hit a guardrail, jersey wall, or any state or privately owned structure, you must stay on the scene and provide information to the police and the owner of the structure.
Leaving the scene could result in arrest, fines, or even jail time. If you leave the scene of a fatal collision, you could face up to 10 years in prison.
