
SOUTHERN MARYLAND — February is officially underway in Southern Maryland, bringing a full calendar of community events tied to both Black History Month and Valentine’s Day.
Ongoing Black History Month programming includes special open house dates at the U.S. Colored Troops Interpretive Center, where visitors can explore the history and contributions of African American soldiers in St. Mary’s County. These events continue throughout the month, offering educational opportunities for residents and visitors.
At the same time, Valentine’s and Galentine’s festivities are picking up across the region, with heart-themed events highlighted in The BayNet’s Valentine’s Day Guide. Local businesses throughout Southern Maryland are preparing creative celebrations, special experiences, and thoughtful gift options for the community.

THINGS TO DO IN CALVERT COUNTY
Campfire on the Beach on Feb. 6 (5:30–7 p.m.), at North Beach waterfront, North Beach – Community beach campfire gathering with marshmallows provided; attendees are encouraged to bring graham crackers, chocolate bars, and a blanket to enjoy an evening by the fire. Free admission.
RenFest 2026 Auditions on Feb. 6 (6–9 p.m.), Feb. 7 (1–4 p.m.), and Feb. 8 (1–4 p.m.), at Southern Community Center, 20 Appeal Ln., Lusby – Open auditions for the 2026 Renaissance Festival season, with opportunities to audition through improvised scenes and optional stage combat demonstrations for interested roles. SuperbOwl Sunday! on Feb. 8 (10 a.m.–12 p.m.), at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, 2880 Grays Rd, Prince Frederick – Family-friendly nature program for children ages 6–12 exploring what makes owls unique, featuring a visit with resident owls and a hands-on owl craft to take home. Creature Feature on Feb. 8 (10:15–11:15 a.m.), at Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road S, Solomons– Monthly Mystery Creature Feature highlighting an animal not normally on display, with hands-on learning about local estuary wildlife and take-home educational coloring pages. Reading Buddies (TB) – Teen Buddy on Feb. 10 (6:30–7:30 p.m.), at Twin Beaches Branch Library – Intergenerational reading program where elementary-aged children participate in activities and read aloud to teen volunteers, who can earn one service learning hour while building confidence and connection.
