The high winds and thunderstorms that swept through Southern Maryland on Sunday left thousands of homes with out power this morning, and is causing havoc for schools and roads.
Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative guesses 3,486 are still without power as of 8:30 a.m. this morning due to the storm. Near 2,100 of those blacked-out are in St. Maryโs County according to SMECOโs numbers.
Dozens of roads because blocked by storm debris and schools across the area are closed or starting two hours late.
In Calvert County, where schools are on a two-hour delay, Beach Elementary, Windy Hill Elementary, and Windy Hill Middle Schools were still without power as of 9 a.m. and will be closed for the day. St. Maryโs County schools are on a two-hour delay and Charles County Schools are closed.
St. Maryโs County volunteer fire departments were alerted to dozens of fallen trees and flooded roads throughout the night.
As of 7 a.m., Baptist Church Road at Hayden Run, and Mechanicsville Road at Chaptico Creek were closed due to 12 inches of water over roadway.
Dr. Johnson Road at St. Clement’s Creek has high water signs with 6″ – 8″ of water over roadway. The road is being evaluated for closure at this time.
