Annapolis, MD — Three SOMD teens are among the young people appointed to the Maryland Youth Advisory Council.

The council advocates on behalf of young people to lawmakers and helps influence policy by providing a different prospective to those in charge of making the rules that affect their future.

Joining the council from our area are:

Kamri Gooding from Waldorf. Kamri Gooding is a Senior at the Maryland School for the Deaf. Kamri was appointed by Governor Larryย  Hogan. The 2019-2020 council year will be Kamriโ€™s first year as a member of the council.

Ian Herd from La Plata. Ian is a sophomore at La Plata High School. Ian was nominated by the Maryland Association of Student Councils and was appointed by the Governorโ€™s Office for Children. The 2019-2020 council year will be Ianโ€™s first year as a member of the council.

Kennedy Smith from Annapolis: Kennedy is a senior at Annapolis High School. Kennedy was appointed by the Speaker of the House. The 2019-2020 council year will be Kennedyโ€™s second year as a member of the council.

Also joining the Council from our SOMD is Sean Woolums from Annapolis: Sean is a senior at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Sean was appointed by the Speaker of the House. The 2019-2020 council year will be Seanโ€™s second year as a member of the council.

This yearโ€™s members represent Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County, Charles County, Frederick County, Harford County, Howard County, Montgomery County, Prince Georgeโ€™s County, and Wicomico County.

Students can be appointed to the council by the Governor, Senate President, or Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. The Governorโ€™s Office for Children appoints other council members nominated by the Maryland Association of Student Councils, University System of Maryland Student Council, Maryland Higher Education Commission Student Advisory Council, and the Association of Local Management Boards.

Council members must be 14 to 22 years of age. Members are required to serve a two-year term, which begins on September 1 and ends August 31 of the following year.
