NEWBURG, Md. — A Charles County man who died in a single-vehicle crash Monday is being remembered by family as a “kind soul with a big heart.” A fundraiser launched this week in memory of Joshua Stephenson, 40, of Newburg, MD.
On August 4, 2025 at approximately 5:03 p.m., emergency personnel and Maryland State Police from the La Plata Barrack responded to a crash in the 12100 block of MD Route 257 (Rock Point Road) in Newburg. A preliminary investigation revealed that a Chevrolet traveling westbound left the roadway for unknown reasons, entered a grassy culvert, struck two trees, and came to rest. Stephenson, of Newburg, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
His cousin, Michael, started a GoFundMe campaign titled “In Memory of Josh Stephenson – Family Support” to help his immediate family with expenses following the sudden loss.
“We are all devastated by this unexpected loss,” Michael wrote. “Josh was a kind soul with a big heart, and his absence leaves an unimaginable void in the lives of everyone who knew and loved him.”
In the post, Michael noted that the family is still grieving the death of Stephenson’s mother, Jean, who passed away in 2024.
“This tragedy comes less than a year after the passing of my beloved aunt (Josh’s mom), adding even more pain to an already difficult time for Darryl, Becky, and the rest of our family,” he wrote.
The campaign met its $7,000 goal within days. As of Thursday, more than $7,250 had been raised through 49 donations. In a follow-up message, Michael thanked the community for its support.
“Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, reached out, and offered support,” he wrote. “Your compassion, generosity, and love have meant more than words can express.”
