NORTH BEACH, Md. — Calvert County Library, Twin Beaches Branch, announced on its Facebook page that it officially received a Bay-Wise certification and signage for landscaping.

The Bay-Wise Living Landscapes Program is a science-based, peer education program conducted by University of Maryland Extension that teaches Marylanders sustainable landscape and garden practices that promote clean water, healthy soil, native biodiversity, and climate-resilient communities. The Twin Beaches branch earned its certification after being visited by a member of the Bay-Wise team and received a sign to place out front.

According to its website, the Bay-Wise Program focuses on water quality, biodiversity, and climate resilience. It comprises a comprehensive set of environmental topics that affect the quality and quantity of water here in Maryland. The program promotes a range of sustainable gardening practices that are appropriate for landscapes of all sizes.

The website also says that most Maryland residents live within a half-mile of a storm drain, stream, or river, waterways that eventually drain into the Chesapeake Bay. By maintaining your own landscape and changing a few practices, each person can contribute to keeping the waterways and environment healthy.

The Twin Beaches Branch encouraged locals to stop by to see their “horticultural beauties” and, of course, to get a book. They also made sure to thank the Chesapeake Beach Green Team, Calvert County Master Gardeners, and the University of Maryland Extension for their help in earning their certification.
