Update by the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack on 12/11/14:

On Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 5:29 pm, TFC W. Couter and Tpr. C. Ruth responded to the Sotterly Plantation in Hollywood for an industrial accident. 

Investigation revealed that James William Morgan, 62, of California, was on the property in a volunteer status.  Mr. Morgan was cutting down a tree when the tree fell and landed on him, causing fatal injuries. 

The investigation is continuing.

Hollywood, MD – Just before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, fire and EMS were dispatched to Sotterley Mansion, 44300 Sotterley Lane in Hollywood for a report of an unconscious subject trapped under a tree. 

Members of the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department and Leonardtown and Hollywood volunteer rescue squads and other emergency medical personnel arrived and pronounced the victim dead.  

Witnesses at the scene stated the male subject was cutting a tree down and was struck by the tree when it fell.

High winds may have played a role in the accident.

The identity of the victim has not been released at this time.
