LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — WARcycle, a service disabled veteran-owned mobile fitness business run by Mark and Anissa Davis in Lexington Park, is reaching families, low-income neighborhoods and military communities in St. Mary’s County by delivering on-site spin and Xtreme Hip-Hop Step classes in parks, community centers and public spaces.

Founded in 2016, WARcycle started with indoor cycling and pop-up classes at local gyms in St. Mary’s County and expanded to fully mobile operations with both spin and Xtreme Hip-Hop Step classes. Mark brought nearly two decades of group fitness experience to the effort, after first instructing in San Diego while on military assignment.

As the couple built local interest in spin classes and Xtreme Hip-Hop Step classes, they then expanded WARcycle into a fully mobile operation, transporting their own spin bikes, step boards and music equipment to parks, neighborhoods and community spaces. WARcycle also holds recurring Xtreme Hip-Hop Step classes at 6 p.m. in the Hickory Hills Clubhouse on Athlone Dr. in Great Mills.

The Davises shaped the WARcycle community as a health and wellness program focused on helping all people stay active regardless of their fitness level, comfort in traditional gyms or access to a regular fitness facility. Mark Davis said the goal has always been to engage people where they are, through approachable and supportive classes that build confidence and fitness consistency.

“We are a health and wellness business trying to keep the community healthy, trying to do our part and keep everyone engaged,” Davis said. “Whether it’s spin class, a step class or our community walks, we’re trying to keep people moving.”

Anissa Davis said the mission of WARcycle is rooted in whole-body wellness and meeting people where they are; those who may feel intimidated by gym environments or disconnected from consistent exercise. She said the business aims to support people through accessible fitness opportunities and a family-like atmosphere where participants encourage one another.

“We don’t leave anybody behind here,” Davis said. “We encourage. When we say WARcycle, we are a family, and we believe in that.”

Chris Hill began attending WARcycle classes in April after hearing about the program through word of mouth. She said she was starting a personal health journey and was looking for a supportive place to stay active.

“They’re amazing. They were so welcoming, and they make you feel comfortable,” Hill said. “You can be yourself and be comfortable, and that’s what I love most about them.”

Hill has continued attending both step and spin classes and said the supportive atmosphere keeps her engaged and motivated. Hill said WARcycle plays an important role in the community as a local veteran-owned family business.

“You have a vet, you have a family business, they’re supportive and loving,” Hill said. “We got to support our Vets, we got to support small businesses, and they’re right in our community. That’s important.”

Local Zumba instructor Melissa Hopf first learned about WARcycle through word of mouth and decided to try the Xtreme Hip-Hop Step class last July. Hopf said she was looking for new ways to dance and connect with others in the Southern Maryland fitness community.

“It’s been great to find such a vibrant, inclusive and supportive community, while I also get to dance, one of my favorite things to do,” Hopf said. “I feel like I’m learning new moves, I’m exercising different parts of my body than what Zumba uses, so it’s exercise, working on the health and fitness journey, spending time with friends.”

WARcycle participants said the group stands out with its supportive atmosphere, inclusive instruction and strong sense of community. Hill and Hopf said they want people in St Mary’s County to know that WARcycle is a veteran-owned small business rooted in the community, offering a positive space to exercise, learn new skills and be supported at any fitness level. They encouraged residents to try a class, support a local business and experience the community the WARcycle built.
