CALIFORNIA, Md. — Since 1810, millions of people have made pilgrimages to Munich, Germany, to celebrate yearly Oktoberfest events. Attendees enjoy special beers, bratwursts, parades, markets and games. But you don’t have to fly to Germany to celebrate — local breweries and venues are offering special brews and festival events here in Southern Maryland and surrounding counties.

Crooked Crab Brewery – 8251 Telegraph Road, Suite D, Odenton, MD 21113
Crooked Crab Brewery is hosting its Crabtoberfest event on Sept. 20.
“We’re releasing our Crabtoberfest Marzen, along with special glassware and T-shirts for the occasion,” said Earl Holman, one of Crooked Crab’s founders. “We will also have new seasonal beers — Das Crabbe Festbier and Double Pumpkin Pie Punchline. There will also be live music and German food specials.”
Crabtoberfest is a traditional Marzen lager, brewed in accordance with the German Reinheitsgebot, which oversees the brewing of beers, including for Oktoberfest. This beer is made with only the finest malts, noble hops and traditional German lager yeast, then lagered at 0 Celsius for optimal drinkability, Holman said.
Das Crabbe is a Munich-style golden lager similarly brewed with German malts for just enough bready flavor and exceptional drinkability, Holman said.
Double Pumpkin Pie Punchline is a sweet and creamy sour ale. “This seasonal treat was brewed with a heaping scoop of pumpkin puree and a dash of fragrant fall spices, then sweetened with brown sugar and creamy lactose, and conditioned on Tahitian vanilla beans,” he said.
“We will have all three available on tap and in cans to go, along with special beer boot glasses and T-shirts,” Holman said. “Our in-house kitchen will have pretzels with beer cheese and brats, along with other seasonal specials, for the occasion.”
