WALDORF, Md. — Multiple people were treated Saturday evening after a strong chemical odor forced customers out of a Golden Corral restaurant along Crain Highway in Waldorf, prompting a hazardous materials response.
The incident occurred Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, around 6:30 p.m. at the Golden Corral in the 2800 block of Crain Highway, where callers reported a sudden chemical smell inside the one-story restaurant. Witnesses told dispatchers a white, mist-like vapor entered the dining area, causing customers to experience difficulty breathing and choking.
Fire and rescue crews evacuated patrons and staff from the building as multiple people were evaluated outside. Officials said at least 13 people were assessed, but no one was transported to a hospital.
Hazardous materials teams conducted air monitoring inside the restaurant and did not detect abnormal readings. Crews ventilated the building, and no ongoing hazard was found. Police were requested to assist with crowd control during the response.
Fire officials later indicated the incident may have involved the discharge of pepper spray or mace inside the business. The Charles County Health Department was notified to follow up.
The scene was cleared after ventilation was completed. The incident remains under investigation.
