ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Anne Arundel County Department of Health confirmed a 9,000-gallon sewage overflow in Spa Creek in Annapolis in a statement on Thursday, Jan. 8.

The Department of Health also advises against direct water contact and says that anyone who does come in contact with the water in the designated area should wash immediately with soap and warm water and should wash their clothes as well. This warning will remain in effect until Jan. 14.

The affected area is in Spa Creek at Hilltop Road and Boxwood Road to the end of Truxton Park. The 9,000-gallon sewage spill was caused by a grease blockage within the city of Annapolis. The spill occurred on Jan. 7, 2026, at 1:45 p.m. The blockage was resolved and the problem corrected, according to the statement. The county also said that the affected area was limed and signage was posted.

This is the second sewage overflow issue in just a few weeks. The Department of Health issued a warning about a leak in Linthicum Heights on Dec. 28, prompting an emergency closing for the Deep Run tributary at 2304 Furnace Ave. and the headwaters of the Patapsco River to Hammonds Ferry Road. This came from a privately owned pumping station.

Liming refers to the process of applying garden lime to an affected area after the initial sewage matter is cleaned up. The lime raises the pH of the water and works naturally to disinfect the area.
