INDIAN HEAD, Md. — A milestone in Charles County’s economic development was celebrated this week as the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) awarded $200,000 to support the final phase of the Maryland Technology Center in Indian Head.

A check presentation was held at the Maryland Technology Center, with DHCD Secretary Jake Day, Sen. Arthur Ellis, Charles County commissioners, and Town of Indian Head Mayor Brandon Paulin in attendance.

The funding supports the last phase of development for the center, which is already creating new job opportunities and attracting high-tech industry to Southern Maryland. The award is part of the state’s record $129.5 million in fiscal year 2025 State Revitalization Program investments and is the third stop in DHCD’s “Great Places Win” event series spotlighting transformational projects across Maryland.

“The Maryland Technology Center is a force for economic rejuvenation, bringing technology development, workforce training and cutting-edge research to Indian Head and all of Southern Maryland,” said Secretary Day. “This project is a leading example of what can be borne out of strong collaboration between the state, local government, and nonprofit partners. The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development is proud to support the Maryland Technology Center and its strong impact on the region.”

The 30,000-square-foot facility, once a grocery store and CVS, has been repurposed to serve as the national headquarters for the United States Bomb Technician Association (USBTA). It includes nearly 5,000 square feet of lab space for research, development, testing and evaluation, and also houses several private contractors and businesses.

“We are grateful for [Maryland]’s Department of Housing and Community Development and their commitment and support for this project – which has become one more great thing for not only the revitalization of Indian Head, but for Charles County, the entire Western Charles Technology Corridor, and the ecosystem currently growing around and in support of the base at Indian Head,” said Charles County Military Alliance Council Chair Steve Mitchell.

The Community Legacy grant builds on previous DHCD investments in Charles County, including the Velocity Center and Oasis Fresh Food Market. Leaders say the Maryland Technology Center is already delivering results, with nine new industry partners and dozens of jobs brought to the area.

“The USBTA is honored and humbled on the incredible support from DHCD,” said USBTA CEO Sean Dennis. “The Maryland Technology Center has been a long process with many coming together to help, but DHCD has been there from the beginning. Due to them, we have this beautiful building that is bringing in other organizations and jobs into Indian Head, Maryland.”
