Winter Storm Forecast Updated: Heavy Snow Now Likely Across Southern Maryland
CALIFORNIA, Md. — A reinforcing Arctic front is expected to sweep across Maryland this week, bringing a fresh surge of cold air and gusty winds that will emphasize winter-like conditions throughout the region.
The National Weather Service says temperatures will fall well below seasonal averages behind the approaching front, with highs struggling to climb into the 20s and overnight lows dipping into the teens through Tuesday and Wednesday. Winds out of the northwest are forecast to be gusty, likely creating uncomfortable wind chill values and increasing hazards for travelers and residents alike.
Following the frontal passage, high pressure is expected to build into the area Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing drier and calmer weather with clearer skies. This temporary ridge of higher pressure should moderate winds and allow temperatures to stabilize, though readings will remain chilly compared to normal for late January.
However, the calm may be short-lived. Forecast models indicate another low pressure system is likely to impact the region late this week into the upcoming weekend. That system is expected to interact with the entrenched cold air mass to the north, potentially producing a mix of wintry precipitation — including rain, snow, or a blend of both — at times through Saturday and into Sunday.
Depending on the track of the storm and how much cold air remains in place, areas of Southern Maryland could see snow accumulation or mixed precipitation, especially across inland zones.
The National Weather Service urges residents to monitor forecast updates closely as the late-week system approaches, particularly those with travel plans or outdoor activities scheduled heading into the weekend.
