VALLEY LEE, Md. — The Second District Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad (VFD&RS) is mourning the loss of Past Chief and Life Member John “Johnny” R. Bean, who passed away on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, at the age of 73.

A lifelong resident of Valley Lee, Bean dedicated nearly three decades to firefighting and emergency services in St. Mary’s County. His tenure began in March 1967 as a junior member of the department, quickly rising through the ranks due to his leadership and steady demeanor. By 1980, he was elected chief, a role in which he served with distinction. Over the years, he held positions as fire lieutenant, fire captain, assistant fire chief, and engineer, in addition to multiple terms on the department’s Board of Directors.

“Johnny was a natural leader,” the department said in a statement. “His ability to remain calm under pressure made him an example for younger members to follow.”

Bean’s impact on the department spanned generations. His wife, sons, grandson, and extended family members have all served the department in various capacities, continuing his legacy of commitment to public service.

Beyond his firefighting career, Bean was an entrepreneur, founding John R. Bean Construction & Stuff in 1986. For nearly four decades, he worked alongside his sons, nephews, and grandsons, taking pride in passing on his knowledge and craftsmanship.

A graduate of Great Mills High School, Bean also had a long career in planning and estimating at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. However, it was his deep connection to his community that defined his life. Known for his gatherings at “The Garage,” his fishing trips aboard The Bean Boys, and his love of local traditions like oyster scalds and stuffed ham, Bean was a beloved figure in Valley Lee.

His funeral services will be held at Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, with visitation on Monday, March 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. A service will follow on Tuesday, March 4, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Second District VFD&RS, ensuring that Bean’s lifelong passion for serving others continues.
