CALIFORNIA, Md. — The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory for early Saturday, impacts are expected across parts of Southern Maryland.
The advisory is in effect from 2 to 9 a.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 25, and includes Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties. Forecasters expect lows near 33 degrees, with frost likely outside of town centers and away from the immediate shores of the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River.
Gardeners in communities such as Leonardtown, California, Charlotte Hall, La Plata, Waldorf, Prince Frederick and Lusby should plan to cover tender plants or bring potted vegetation indoors. Unprotected, sensitive plants may be damaged or killed if left exposed.
The advisory also covers portions of the District of Columbia and central and northern Virginia. Temperatures across the broader region are forecast to fall into the low to upper 30s, with the coldest readings in sheltered valleys west of the metro area.
Officials note the chill marks a likely end to the growing season for many inland locations. Residents are encouraged to check on outdoor pets and consider disconnecting or draining garden hoses before daybreak.
